Non-Spoiler Review

I seriously love this new edition to the Shadowhunter world. The Mortal Instruments was one of the first series I read when I got back into reading again. It was something so new, but I loved it. Then I decided to read The Infernal Devices and that was it. I was in love. One of my favorite series ever. After reading City of Heavenly Fire I was pretty much done with the Shadowhunter series. I knew Clare was coming out with a new series but wasn't sure I was going to read it. I am SO GLAD that I did. I loved this book so much! I loved that I remembered some of the Blackthorns because they were in TMI. And getting to see some of the past characters from Clare's other series was super special 😍.

So this series follows Julian Blackthorn and Emma Carstairs. They are parabatai and have been for some time now. They live at the Los Angeles institute with Julian's brothers and sisters, Drusilla (Dru), Livia (livi), Tiberius (Ti), and Octavian (Tavi). Also living their temporarily is Cristina Rosales, who is from the Mexico institute visiting and also running away from some things in her past. Diana Wrayburn is the tutor and Arthur Blackthorn, Julian's Uncle, is the head at the institute.

This book was such a fun and crazy ride. We get Mark back, who has been with the wild hunt for 5 years now. He helps Emma, Julian, and Christina solve the murders of downworlders and fairies, and helps find out what is going on with all of the black magic and who is behind it all. We have lots of insane twists and turns along the way that will surprise you. Cassandra is so amazing at writing such intricate stories! And her character development of each of these characters is so good. I love each and everyone one of these people, and I am so excited to see what else happens in this series.

Character Love

Emma Carstairs ~ I love Emma! I honestly forgot how much I loved her until I did this reread. She had me laughing out loud throughout the whole book. Her humor is the best. She reminds me of a girl version of Jace. I love how caring and protective she is with the ones she loves. She is definitely not a person I would ever want to mess with.

Julian Blackthorn ~ Julian is probably my favorite of the group. He is so caring and loving. He loves his family above all else and will do anything he can for them. He took care of them since he was only 12. He is only 17, but he seems way older because of all he has gone through. The things he has to go through in this book broke my heart, but he stayed strong for his family. And I seriously love him and Emma! They make the best parabatai out of all the series!

Cristina Rosales ~ I liked Cristina from the get-go. She became friends with Emma almost immediately, and they are the best of friends now. I'm so glad that Emma has Cristina. I love how quickly she befriended all the Blackthorns when they got back from Europe. I definitely couldn't imagine her not being with them. I love how she is loyal, and loving, and cares for others. Especially for the fairies.

Mark Blackthorn ~ Mark is the brother who was stolen away by the hunt after the Cold Peace treaty was signed. He and his sister Helen are half faeries. Because of this treaty, signed by Shadowhunters and the faeries of the Seelie Court, Mark and his sister Helen, could no longer stay with their family. Mark was treated harshly with the hunt but loved the freedom of it. He finally gets to be back with his family but it definitely is not what it once was. Mark made me laugh a lot. Mostly because he forgot all the ways of the Shadowhunters.

Livi Blackthorn ~ Livi is one of the twins. She is super sweet and just wants to be part of the action. She also very badly wants to be paratabai with her twin brother Ti. She gets to do a good amount of help along with Ti to find out what's going on with the killings.

Ti Blackthorn ~ I love Ti. He has what mundanes would call autism. He is very smart but has his quirks and I love him even more for them. He also really loves Sherlock homes and loves to read! He is very good with technology and helps do a lot of research for Julian and Emma.

Drusilla Blackthorn ~ We don't get to know Drusilla too much. She loves love, and she helps a lot with Tavi. We get to know more about her in the next book.

Tavi Blackthorn ~ Tavi is the baby and is the sweetest. Julian calls him, his baby. He gets a chance to help some with all that's going on which makes him very happy.

Diana Wrayburn ~ Diana is the Los Angeles tutor. She doesn't live with the Blackthorns. Some wonder why she doesn't take over and become head of the institute, but Julian knows there has to be something she is hiding. She really cares for the Blackthorns and I really like her as the tutor!

Malcolm Fade ~ Malcolm Fade is the High Warlock of Los Angeles. He is an odd character but very likable. He is pretty close to the Blackthorn family and helps Julian with things that he needs. He also is a sucker for love. He is definitely not as good as Magnus Bane, but I do like him.

Arthur Blackthorn ~ Arthur is the Head of the Los Angeles Institute. He is also Julian's Uncle. He is not really in the children's lives and is rarely seen around the institute. He is usually in his study working on his projects.

Spoilery Review

Here comes the fun part! This is where I rant about all my thoughts while I was reading the book! I listened to this one, and will definitely listen to the rest of the series. Morena Baccarin is a great narrator. She captured everyone's voice so perfectly.

  • I completely forgot about Johnny Rook and his son Kit. When the book started I was so confused for a minute because I had no idea who I was listening to. But it all came back to me once I heard Johnny Rook's name. I love how Emma talks to Johnny, it cracks me up.

  • Cristina! I love her so much. I'm so glad that she was around while the Blackthorns were gone. And I love how quickly she and Emma became friends.

  • I also forgot how much I loved the Blackthorns. I was so glad when Jules got back.

  • Mark!!! I really like Mark. He is such a great character. It's so sad when he first gets to the institute because he doesn't know how to act in front of anyone but Cristina. He forgot how much all his brothers and sister grew.

  • I'm so glad that Mark had Cristina there to help him. I love how Cristina has always been super interested in Mark, even when she was younger. For her to get a chance to be around him and talk to him has to be so amazing for her.

  • Julian is such a strong person. For him, at age 12, to know that if anyone finds out about his uncle being mad they will rip his family apart is really insane. And for 5 years he kept it all up. The correspondence and keeping his family together. Learning how to cook and keep them all happy and be a mother and father to them. So amazing.

  • It was so nice to see Magnus again! He is seriously one of my favorite characters in the Shadowhunter realm. So to have him in this series to is so nice.

  • That moment when Mark realizes who his family is is one of my favorite parts! It makes me so happy.

  • I kept thinking, when will Julian and Emma be truthful to one another.

  • I really love the twins. I love how much they love one another and are there for each other. I feel so bad for Livi because she wants to bad to become parabatai with her twin. But I understand why he doesn't want to. He wants to go to the Scholomance.

  • When Mark makes a huge mess in the kitchen and Tavi was in the sugar and everyone is eating junk food was hilarious. I thought it was too cute, and I felt so bad for Mark because he was really just trying. It's hard for Julian because he can't be that fun brother. He has to be the father, and I know that's one reason Julian got so mad. I just felt really bad for Mark.

  • We finally get to meet perfect Diego, and I do not like him.

  • I love that Malcolm pretty much made Julian tell Emma and Mark the truth. It needed to happen. It's insane that he was able to keep it from everyone for that long! Malcolm had to care for Julian just a little bit. Why else tell Julian to stop lying to everyone. Unless he thought everyone would be made at him.

  • The whipping was such an intense scene. It was hard to read. I love how Julian stuck up for Mark and took his place, but I hate that Emma did that to him. So sad. Kieran's plan backfired on him. He thought that Mark would just be sent back to the hunt.

  • What they find out is going on with the killings is so creepy. Such a weird cult following! The whole Annabel Lee story and what the Guardian is truly trying to do. I love how Tavi is the one who brought up that it was an old Shadowhunter story.

  • That moment when we find out Malcolm is behind it all. I actually forgot it was him. I was surprised for a minute. I hate that he befriended the Blackthorns just to plot his revenge. They all liked him so much. What a creepy scene though. all those dead people in the chairs and the Hands of Glory was some crazy stuff. I was scared for Tavi and Dru! I'm so glad that Emma killed him. I know it was hard but he killed her parents just to try that spell out. That's horrible. What is the parabatai curse?!?!?!

  • Ugh, Robert Lightwood. I'm pretty sure I didn't like him much in The Mortal Instruments. I love that once again we see Jace and Clary and Magnus though.

  • Julian is a genius. The way he comes up with his plans and lies flawless is pretty insane. I love how he concocted the whole thing with Arthur and Anselm Nightshade.

  • So when Malcolm dies, the protection spells come down on Johnny Rooks house. Demons come through the floor and attack Johnny. Kit gets scared and calls Emma.

  • Emma, Jem, and Tessa go to Rooks house to help Kit and we find out that Kit is actually Christopher Herondale. The long lost Herondale. Which would also make Johnny a Herondale as well. That is why Johnny would always tell Kit to hide and would tell him horrible things about Shadowhunters.

  • Jem tells Emma what the parabatai curse is! We finally know, and wow is it crazy. It is a lot worse than I thought it was going to be.

  • Ugh, I just don't understand why she wouldn't just tell Julian. He could totally take it. It would make things so much easier. I hate that she has to break his heart. And use Mark. I know he is pretty heartbroken at the moment because he saw perfect Diego and Cristina kissing, but still. The whole thing makes me really sad.

  • EEKK!!!! Annabel has risen!!!!!!
